Peas are small wonders for health.
Researches have found that they contain substances that can prevent
cancer, lower cholesterol and alleviate symptoms of the common cold.
The compound in peas that helps fight
cancer is called chlorophyllin which is the pigment that gives peas
their shiny green hue. Chlorophyllin attaches to carcinogens (cancer
causing chemicals) and helps to prevent them from being absorbed.
It has been known for a long time that
eating dietary fiber is one of the best ways to lower cholesterol and
reduce the risk of heart disease and other health problems. Green peas
are an excellent source of fiber. In the intestine the fiber binds
with bile, a digestive fluid high in cholesterol and removes it from
the body. This automatically brings cholesterol levels down. In
addition, peas have been found to contain a lot of vitamins especially
vitamin C, which help to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease
and the common cold. |
